Learning from the WaterLEARNING FROM THE WATER
FISHING TACTICS & FLY DESIGNS FOR THE TOUGHEST TROUT

by René Harrop

René Harrop shares lessons learned from a life-time of fishing the world’s toughest trout water — his home water, the Henry’s Fork. It's one of the most difficult spring creeks in the world, and René has developed legendary techniques and flies to meet that challenge.

In Learning from the Water, René imparts his wisdom on the importance of insect stages, the flies for a successful fly box, and how to plan and prepare for a trip to any unfamiliar water. Chapters on midges, caddis, Flavs, Callibaetis, Tricos, PMDs, hoppers, beetles, aquatic wasps, and Baetis give solid inside information on each of these important insects. As well as the Harrop patterns that inspire fly tiers the world over.

• 90 fly patterns detailing the insects & the patterns developed to imitate them
• Photos by Bonnie & René Harrop, Toshi Karita, Rich Paini, Masa Katsumata
• Original artwork by René Harrop

“In a lifetime nearing seven decades, I have devoted the vast majority of my time probing the mysteries of legendary waters like the Yellowstone, Firehole, Madison, Snake, & the Henry’s Fork. Numerous lesser known rivers & lakes have cooled my legs but not my enthusiasm as I roam this region with a constant spirit of anticipation & discovery. In a single lifetime, it would be impossible to fish all the water in & near the park, & a close relationship with even a handful is a significant accomplishment.”
—René Harrop, Learning from the Water

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: René Harrop is author of Trout Hunter, producer of the DVD Harrop Family Ties, & the Hooked on Fly Tying Series: Favorite Flies, Life Cycle of the Caddisfly, Life Cycle of the Mayfly, & Tying with Turkey. René also contributes to the Fly Fisherman magazine. A fly-tying legend especially known for his pattern designs with CDC, René has run his own fly-tying shop, the House of Harrop, from his home on the banks of Idaho’s Henry’s Fork since 1968. A true family business, House of Harrop also employs his wife, Bonnie, along with his children, Leslie & Shayne.
