"The nice part about fishing all the time is that an angler can spare moments for just sitting and watching the water. These spells don't even have to have a purpose, but it is hard not to discover some secrets during such interludes. The fisherman without a schedule doesn't need to rush about, casting furiously in a hunt for every possible trout. For this reason, he usually catches more of them."

Includes presentation, such as explaining why your approach is critical; making the choice to fish up stream, across or down; details a variety of useful casts; and explains the critical factors you need to get a good drift. Covers fishing slow water, emerger feeding, high water levels & fishing at depth. Demonstrates how to tie eight small patterns that can easily be adapted to match any midge hatch on your waters. Davy picks his top producers and precisely instructs you on the details he believes are essential for bringing them to life. Any stage of a midge or tiny aquatic insect’s life cycle can be simulated once you learn these ties, and they fish equally well on still or moving waters.

Mastering the Dead Drift

MASTERING THE DEAD DRIFT: INDICATOR NYMPHING SIMPLIFIED & PERFECTED
with Aaron Jasper
—watch the trailer—
The majority of fly fishermen begin nymph fishing using traditional tight-line methods with split shot and no indicator and most early attempts at nymphing are done with rigs of similar modified design. These styles of nymphing are effective on smaller streams. However, many anglers find out when venturing into larger rivers with little gradient, where presenting flies at a distance is necessary to catch trout, that no single nymphing technique fits every situation. Indicator style nymphing enables anglers to present small flies to heavily pressured fish with precision. Rigging, casting, mending, fly and weight selection as well as several scenarios are covered. The casting and ending segments were filmed in slow motion high-definition with voice-overs to enable viewers to easily learn the techniques.

Only The River Knows

Legendary Film~
ONLY THE RIVER KNOWS

—watch the trailer—
In 1988 one of the most iconic fly fishers of our time, Lars Lenth, spent three months exploring the legendary Lethe River on New Zealand's wild & wondrous South Island — fishing for its abnormally large trout. At night, he would sit down in a remote cabin and write down his experiences in a detailed journal. Nearly 25 years later, the young trout bum Rolf Nylinder loses his way in the wilderness near Lethe. By chance, he finds the long-lost journal, full of insights about the very soul of fly fishing. Along with Rolf on the trip is documentarist Peter Christensen, filming their mostly failed attempts to catch trout, and Rolf's ever-growing obsession of the journal. The entire journal of Lars Lenth has been reconstructed by an extensive and ambitious team of cinematographers and crew members.

*** Gary's Induction into "The Hall of Fame" ***

On October 23rd, 2004, the Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum held its Sixth Annual Fly Fishing Hall of Fame Induction and Dinner. A good friend of Gary's, Ken Parkany, was privileged and honored to accept the Hall of Fame Induction Award for Gary. Ken thoughtfully sent us some photos he took of the "The Hall of Fame" Induction Brochure.

The Hall of Fame was established to recognize those fly fishers who during their lives have made a major positive impact on fly fishing. The overall process for inclusion includes a widespread recognition of continued efforts, a unique contribution that has affected the betterment of fly fishing, and a lasting effect it has made on the fly fishing community by the candidate.

• TYING TIP • Emergent Sparkle Pupa

HipWader.comThe famous fly, LaFontaine Emergent Sparkle Pupa, is the subject of many customer questions. One of our fellow webbies and tyers, Rob O'Reilly, has unraveled its mysterious recipe on his own Canada website page. Even if you've tied hundreds of this fly, it's worth the look (click the "cool" fish). Rob did a great job explaining step-by-step instructions along with awesome detailed pictures. Although he did say he hadn't anticipated the clear antron's "sparkle" being so hard to photograph. Thanks for pursuing, Rob!
